Does the fold matter?

Jason Sutton takes on the question of whether or not we still need to design to keep content “above the fold“.

Sadly, the answer seems to be “maybe???”. Certainly lots of vertical scrolling seems to be the new design trend, especially for those in the “mobile-first” camp. But as Jason points out – the most recent usability study on scrolling is from the Bush administration. At this point it seemed as if a quarter of all users still never scrolled down on a web site, and we have no statistical evidence to prove definitively that this has changed.
